G'day All! My name is Kris Meares and I'm the creative force behind the Tag Along Teddies craft pattern range.
I'm a Journalist by trade, having completed a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Journalism at USQ in Toowoomba, Queensland, and I worked as a Journalist/photographer in western NSW for seven years. My husband, Scott, and I both grew up in QLD, so were keen to return north of the border (particularly at State of Origin time!) We moved to a rural community west of Toowoomba in 1999 and thus began my designing career!
While I've always loved bears and always dabbled in crafts of many kinds, it wasn't until we moved that I had the opportunity to attend a bear making class run by a friend of a friend. From the first, slightly soggy-in-the-middle mohair bear, I was hooked! I used commercial patterns until visiting a shop in Mooloolaba called “Bears On The Wharf” owned by a fantastic lady, who encouraged me to design my own patterns and offered to sell my furry creations. Since that early foray into design, my interests have grown and diverged.
The pattern design side of Tag Along Teddies evolved after I was asked to teach bear making at a Church craft group. Many ladies were intimidated by hand-stitched mohair bears, so I designed patterns for a pair of bears made from toweling in a simple style perfect for beginners or people who prefer machine to hand sewing. This opened the floodgates to my creative imagination and since then the Tag Along Teddies range of craft patterns has expanded to include towelling bears, country cloth dolls, patchwork bags, stitchery wall hangings, applique quilts and more, all available through this web site, as well as The Quilters Angel at Highfields, QLD.
My imagination is always veering in a dozen different design directions, so my range of patterns is constantly growing. While many of my patterns are bears or feature stitchery or applique bears, there are others that have different themes, so there is something for everyone. Most patterns are great for beginners or experienced stitchers and have simple instructions, as I myself joke that I am instruction impaired and need simple directions!! Tee! Hee! Hee!
I am married to my best friend and though we don't have children, we have a Border Collie named Wombat, an adopted terrier-cross called Lily and an ever-growing population of bears! When I'm not designing craft patterns, I fill my 'spare' time with patchwork, applique, embroidery, reading fantasy fiction, adventures and mysteries, home decorating and renovating (we have a Federation style house in need of lots of TLC!), singing, listening to music, watching movies, traveling, and belly dancing!
